A bugs and insects birthday party and chinese food for dinner for our JW. With thanks to Aunty B for taking so many photos, I was still icing the cake when the guests arrived. Every year I promise myself I will be more organised...

AG2R Quilt

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Apologies for all the photos but I am chuffed that this is finished. Thrilled! Delighted! Turning cartwheels of pure delight!
When Mr Duyvken came home from his Tour de France adventure last year he asked if I would make a baby quilt for one of the men he had met. Martin is Focus Bikes team liaison to the AG2R La Mondiale team (at least he was when this whole project began) and Mr Duyvken and his mate Ben had a great time with him seeing how the team runs and how the Tour unfolds (and then folds back up again to move on to the next stage). Mr Duyvken always watches the Tour and being able to be part of it for a couple of stages was really amazing. Martin and his partner were expecting a baby so making them a baby quilt, using the AG2R logo and colours seemed like a good way to say thank you for the experience. The logo is a great graphic but I quickly found that stitching it to make a nice, neat quilt block was quite difficult. After some trial and error, and lots of time with the machine packed away, I found a way to make the blocks and I am really happy with how it has turned out. I will put a tutorial together for anyone who might be interested in trying it themselves.
The quilt measures 96cm by 116cm, a good size for a cot quilt, is made with cotton fabrics, cotton batting, backed with spots, bound with stripes and heading for it's home with a little bub in Germany.

Whoever said 'take a picture, it'll last longer' was onto something. If I hadn't taken this photo of J on the evening all the cousins got together to decorate christmas ornaments I don't think I'd have any recollection of it. It makes me happy every time I see it and I remember just what it felt like on that warm summer evening 4 years ago when we were hoarse from laughter, sticky from glue and sparkly from glitter.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Heart full.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Tuesday, April 05, 2016

This is one of my favourite photos. My nan took it with her very smart, pocket sized, point and click camera when she visited us sometime in the late 1970s. I am probably 2 years old here and just about to become a big sister.
Nan was famous for chopping people’s heads off in photos. I imagine this is because she was looking over the camera as she took the picture and not peering through the little viewfinder. Almost all her photos turned out like this and they were all still deemed good enough to put into photo albums. We have page after page of them.

Was I smiling? Looking glum? Squinting? Probably, I was always squinting. I can’t know for sure but this ‘choose your own adventure’ style of photography lets me pick. So I choose – smiling at my loving but stern nan, squinting into the sunshine while she took the picture. With the sunshine at her back her short red hair, fashionably set, would have formed a glowing halo. Perhaps, I am gazing (squintingly) at her adoringly. Marvelling at this wondrous creature with big glasses and a big laugh who has suddenly appeared before me.
