New Things

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Mr Duyvken and I received this card in the post on Monday. It is a very sweet card announcing a wedding. The only problem is that I am not sure how to respond, or even if I should respond.
It isn't an invitation and it isn't a save the date card, it seems to be just an fyi card. Is this an american practice? I think we'll put a card in the mail and hope that it's the right thing to do. Any other suggestions, dear Reader?

Elements of a Great Story

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

A few of the little duyvkens haven't been feeling well these past few days so there has been a lot of hanging around, keeping warm and recuperating. Sweetie and JW have constructed some very complex stories using lego figures. These kids really understand narrative structure and dramatic arc. It's a lot of fun to watch.

The Morning After

Sunday, April 26, 2015

We hosted a 30th birthday dinner last night for Mr Duyvken's youngest sister. It was a very fun night. This morning I realised that the birthday girl left her socks behind.

Eucalyptus Grey

Monday, April 20, 2015

One of my favourite corners of the house and one of my favourite photos of my babies. This was taken on an overnight trip to Canberra a couple of summers ago. We had just finished eating some delicious blueberry pancakes and were walking back to the car. It was a really lovely trip.

Broken

Sunday, April 19, 2015

All the roman blinds we put in when we moved in here 7 years ago are breaking. The plastic clips at the back of the blinds have all degraded in the sun and grown brittle. I have been hunting for replacement pieces that are the right size to clip onto the crossbars of the blinds. They aren't easy to find. Or rather, those little pieces are easy to find but they are too large to hold the crossbars on the blinds we have. Who knew this could be so tricky?

7 Years Old Today

Saturday, April 18, 2015

Happiest of days to our sweet JW. She told me the other day that when she was born and was in the hospital with me she was very excited because she thought she was an only child. Then, when we got home and she realised she had 2 older sisters and an older brother she felt (and I quote) 'a little disappointed but it's turned out OK'. I hope that the rest of her life is also filled with unanticipated pleasures.

Last Times Time of Year

Friday, April 17, 2015

Yesterday was a spectacular day. It was hot and sunny with a knock-you-down storm just after dark. After some cool weather it was lovely to feel the heat of the sun again. We are enjoying the last few dips in the pool before the cold weather sets in permanently.

A Little Bit Australian

Wednesday, April 08, 2015

Vegemite sandwiches and passionfruit for lunch.
Sweetie learned a new song at pre-school to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. You will just have to imagine the completely adorable hand actions that go with it.
Twinkle, twinkle, vegemite.
Spread it thin and take a bite.
If you drop it on the ground.
It will make the carpet brown.
Twinkle, twinkle, vegemite.
I'm OK and you're alright.

Baking

Tuesday, April 07, 2015

Trying a new recipe from this book by Dominque Ansel.
The photography is beautiful, the recipes are intricate and go on for pages and pages. I am enjoying looking through the book but Mr Duyvken has dived straight in and started baking. I am sure we will enjoy the fruits of his labour.

The Duckling Sleeps

Monday, April 06, 2015

After a very big day of Easter enchantment this little fairy fell asleep on the couch while her brothers and sisters sat around her giggling and nibbling on chocolates. Mass in the morning, lunch at Oma's and an afternoon in the garden - it was a very good day.

Breakfast in Bed

Copper Tags

Friday, April 03, 2015

For plant labels. You write on them heavily with ball point pen and as the copper weathers and the ink washes away the indentation becomes more distinct and is easily read. Well, that is what is supposed to happen. I don't think I leaned heavily enough on it when I wrote so the writing has completely disappeared and now it is just a pretty decoration. I shall have to try again. I seem to remember all my folder paper curling up on itself when covered on both sides with my heavy handwriting when I was studying for the HSC. I must be losing hand strength as I age. Sigh.

At the End of the Night.

Wednesday, April 01, 2015

We had beautiful weather, we over-catered (as usual), we celebrated and caroused and had a great time. The kids adored staying up so late and were giggling crazily at the end of the night as they tried to toss their pistachio shells into the empty bowl on the coffee table. Some things are so much funnier when you are over-tired. Unfortunately, washing up is not one of them but a few bowls of leftover tiramisu and the end of a bottle of champagne helped enormously. Mr Duyvken and I rolled very gratefully into bed in the early hours of the morning.  It was a fine night.
