'Up' she says and as I reach down to pick her up a dozen thoughts crowd in at once. She's still so little and so light, on the cusp of bigness as we are on the cusp of a new year, She will lose all traces of babyness this year, Sweetie will start pre-school this year and we will enter a new era as a family. I can't really imagine life without a little in the house but I guess all good things must come to an end and we certainly had a good run. So here's to the wonder of big kids and all that it will bring.

As my mother-in-law says 'all you wish for yourselves' dear reader. Happy New Year to you all.

The beauty of having a much bigger sister.
Actually, there are lots of wonderful things about having a much bigger sister. Especially when that bigger sister is G. The littlest duckling saves some of her biggest grins and warmest hugs for her biggest sister. That's a lot of -ests but it's all true.

This sums up 2014 perfectly. My sister gave this to me a few years ago and I only recently bought a frame for it. I am hopeful that I will find time to do some sewing and making in the new year. I miss it.

At Christmas a couple of years ago Sweetie and Oma wore matching outfits and we took some photos. So when Oma popped in the other day and we realised that she and the littlest ducking were coordinated not only with each other but with the tree we had to take some pictures. Aren't they adorable?

Merry Christmas, dear reader, from the duyvkens.

'Twas the night before Christmas.

Unanticipated Christmas lights.

Gifts for our neighbours.

Christmas is nearly here. Advent, the time of building joy and waiting, is nearly over for another year. If the weather holds we are going to meet Mr Duyvken in the cbd after work to see the lights at St Mary's cathedral and the DJ's window displays. If it rains we will drive around the neighbourhood and ooh and aah at all the lovely lights and then have thai takeout at home. Either way, it is bound to be a good day.

This works well for the younger ones but we will have to rework it for the older kids. Perhaps we will have after dinner ice blocks in the pool?
Dear reader, you asked the other day how I feel about Love Actually. I assume you are asking if I think it is a Christmas movie. I really enjoyed it the first time I saw it. I will definitely be adding it to the Christmas playlist for the older duyvkens.

We ate so much last night at our first family Christmas event for 2014 that we have decided to have pancakes for dinner instead of breakfast. We love pancakes so much we're all eating very sparsely today so that we fit plenty in tonight.

The little duyvkens were given this set of books from their great aunt and uncle. They are so beautiful I thought they deserved a photo all of their own.

Elf? The Snowman? Arthur Christmas? Die Hard? There are so many good options.

I don't think we'll end up doing this one. The kids are all enjoying a pyjama day and I haven't organised any supplies. We can gather some sticks on our bushwalk this afternoon and dig the rubber bands out of the desk drawer but it might just be clapping sticks and strummies this year.

This has become such a lovely tradition, we look forward to it every year.

Happy 10th birthday to our wonderful J. Fruit cups for the classroom treat and dinner in the backyard tonight. I think it's going to be a great day.

It has been a year filled with blessings and avoidance of bad luck. We have much to be thankful for.
The events in Sydney overnight are very upsetting and make the things for which we are grateful feel precious and fragile.
I'll ride with you.
Peace and goodwill to all.

It is always a good day to have an early dinner at the beach. Today it is 10 years since we lost my dad so it felt especially good to have the sea breeze blowing away the sads. We still miss him so much. I often feel unreasonably annoyed at tv producers who keep making shows that I know dad would have loved but never got to see and today I felt unreasonably happy to see Sweetie eating his fish and chips with a fork, just like dad would have. It seems that cutlery preference is a genetically inheritable trait. I wonder which strand of DNA it sits on?  I hope it is on the band near courtesy and joy in small things, near a twist supporting eyes that sparkle and a love of reading. If Sweetie carries those things forward I will be a very happy mama, and a very proud daughter.

1943 - 2004. Forever in our hearts, our family stories and our sparkling eyes.

One of my beautiful neighbours brought brownies over yesterday afternoon just as we were getting home after school. How lucky are we, dear reader? I ate one for you. It was delicious.

We move the activities around each year to make sure that it fits in with all the other Christmas/end of year things that we have on. In between concerts, masses, speech nights, etc it can be challenging to make the space in each day to do the advent activity. Many of them, like today's drawing pictures are very adaptable. Some years we pack up all the art supplies and head to the park to draw in the open air with a picnic and serious artistic intention. Today it will be a quick picture while the kids have afternoon tea before we head back to school for the end of year mass where choirs of angels will sing. Truly adorable angels.

This is J's favourite advent activity. He sets up his telescope, searches his skywatching book, opens the star app on the tablet and away we go. Hopefully, the skies will be clear enough to see a few precious constellations and planets.

The little duyvkens will be writing their letters to Santa today. I am looking forward to finding out what their hearts desire. Hopefully Sweetie will have changed his mind about asking for a drum kit.

Crazy hair and a stormy night. With all the humidity in the air I don't need to do anything for my hair to qualify.

Christmas stories today. After our usual Thursday afternoon/evening madness it will be nice to sit together to read some books. Dear reader, I hope you find a few moments of peacefulness in today as well.

Face painting - always a little messy and lots of fun.

We parked on the 3rd floor when we visited mum today. Sweetie was excited because that is both today's date and his age. In fact, he was so excited, he insisted I take a photo.

December 2nd

Tuesday, December 02, 2014

We have Operation, Rummikub and Battleship set up in preparation for an after dinner games extravaganza.

It is also my mum's birthday today, she marked the occasion by having (minor) surgery. It isn't the best way to celebrate a birthday but it all went smoothly and she should be home tomorrow.

December 1st

Our Advent activity calendar starts today. It is one of my favourite times of the year.

Happiness is being 9 months old... or being near someone who is.

I think the littlest duckling may have been reading some of the baby development books because she is ticking off all the milestones in the expected timeframes. She is crawling and trying to pull herself up on things. She loves taking things out of a container and then putting them all back in again. She likes playing the repeat after me game with her big sister, C. She loves board books, clapping hands, music and eating.
She also constantly has her tongue sticking out. It's her signature move, like JW's head tilt or J's use of the phrase 'just to say...' when he wants to tell you something that isn't pertinent to the current conversation. She premiered it shortly after birth and seems to be sticking with it.

It's quite handy because it helps us distinguish between photos the duckling and photos of C at the same age. The resemblance is uncanny.

Genes are amazing. Looking at these photos I now feel like a temporary home for my DNA, a vessel into which the precious people soup has been poured, to be distributed into other vessels and then discarded. I imagine lines of ducklings stretching out into the past and the future with only slight variations distinguishing one from another. We are all DNA express envelopes. We are all of the earth. We are all precious vessels.

Quilt Top Finished

Saturday, July 12, 2014

I am very happy with how this looks. The fabric I bought for the backing is not quite wide enough so I will need to piece the back. I was hoping to avoid doing that. I have had to pack the sewing machine away because we are having friends over for dinner tonight and although it is not that hard to get it all set up again I am a bit hopeless. I am determined to get this finished for the littlest duckling and the kids are back at school this week so hopefully I won't lose momentum.

The grey spot is for the back and the pink texta stripe is for the binding. I went to my local fabric store to get the binding fabric and came away with a couple of other things as well. A well-known story to all the sewers and quilters out there. I don't know what I'll use that paper airplane fabric for yet but I love it.
