How to Get What You Want - Crib Notes from Sweetie

Friday, June 28, 2013

Step 1: Acquire toy of your choice under the guise of purchasing it as a birthday gift for your cousin.
Step 2: Lovingly care for toy all the way home lulling your mama into a false sense of security.
Step 3: Once home, open box when mama is not looking and 'decorate' toy with biro.
Step 4: Share your new treasure, the world's noisiest toy, with your siblings.
Step 5: Remind your mama that this treasure is much more than just 4 plastic hippos. It is the visceral beauty of saturating yourself in pleasure, joy and companionship.

Thank you for the lesson, Sweetie. Mama needs reminders now and then.

Baby Name of the Week - Calliope

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Sweetie - 2 days old
There has been more coverage and discussion than I think is really necessary about Kim Kardashian's baby's name. I have, up until now, been able to avoid the Kardashian thing. I fall outside the target demographic and I am really not impressed by using a sex tape as a step towards fame. But even I have been hearing a lot about the name and, since baby names are currently on my radar, I instantly tagged it yes or no. A little girl named North? I like it. Although North is not the compass point name that I would choose for my own little one. My grandmother's maiden name was Weston and I always thought it would be a great name for a boy, shortened to West, like one of the characters in Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride.
However, this baby I am carrying is sporting some very lovely XX chromosomes so we're looking for a girl's name and that's a bit of a dilemma. Mr Duyvken and I always have trouble settling on a name and, having used 3 of our favourite girl's names already, I know this is going to take a while. So, rather than exclusively bore Mr Duyvken with my endless suggestions, I am going to share them here with you, dear reader. Mr Duyvken thanks you in advance.
My first name suggestion is Calliope.
The muse of epic poetry in Greek mythology.
Meaning: beautifully voiced.
Shortens to: Callie.

The Belle of the Ball in Ballet Pink

One of Mr Duyvken's younger sisters is getting married in October. We haven't been to a family wedding for quite a while. Mr Duyvken's oldest sister was married in 1999 just 3 months after our wedding, my younger sister was married in 2005 when J was only 4 months old and G was a flower girl, and then Mr Duyvken's brother was married 3 years ago in Northern Ireland and we could only afford for Mr Duyvken to go. G and I stayed up late to watch the ceremony over the internet wearing our pjs and robes. It was very glamorous. So, having this opportunity to dress up and celebrate feels pretty special. I will have had a baby just 2-3 weeks prior so heaven only knows what I'll be able to wear but I am enjoying shopping for the kids.
I found these 2 beautiful dresses online (www.next.co.uk) and they are just beautiful. The girls love them and I think it will be hard to keep them in the wardrobe until the wedding.
Now, I just need to find G and the lads something to wear. G is very excited about shopping for a dress. I just hope we can find something that we can both agree on.

Passing the mantle

Do you remember when JW and I worked on our choc chip muffin recipe? Back before she was one of the 'big kids'? Today Sweetie and I made some using her recipe. He is a little messier in the kitchen than she was, but then again, he is only 2.

Sweetie's POV

I found some photos that Sweetie took on my phone and thought I would share them here.

A New Duyvken

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

It won't surprise you, dear reader, to learn that my Mr Duyvken and I are very fond of children. We love them squishy and new when they have to use their whole forehead to open their eyes; we love them when they are toddling; we love them when they are little kids with home readers and big laughs; we love them when they graduate to big kidness with big kid friendship dramas and a growing sense of who they are; and I am pretty certain we'll love the teenage stage we are just getting to with G. It has it's own beauty in amongst all that kik/instagram/mobile phone negotating. We really enjoy the raucous family that we've created and the chaos and love that surrounds us. We feel very intensely the passing of time and know that so much that is truly good in life is swiftly fleeting. I think, in a weird way, we even enjoy the hard work that is required to keep things afloat around here.
So, in the spirit of 'do what you love', 'hard work reaps rewards', 'life is short', and 'kids are awesome' we have decided to welcome one more baby into our family. The newest little duyvken is due in September which makes me about 26 weeks pregnant. Third trimester here we come!

Baking

Eating scones hot from the oven on a wet weekend after soccer is bliss.Almost worth the cleanup required after baking them with my two eager assistants, JW and Sweetie.

Making

Sunday, June 02, 2013

G's doona came with two matching pillow cases but we've only ever used one so I've had a spare pillow case kicking around in the linen cupboard for a while. I finally pulled it out, cut it up and made a quick log cabin cushion cover. This only took an hour, fits a 45x45 insert and is perfect for leaning against to read, kik friends or play sugar sugar

She loves it. I think I'd be happier with it if I had thought to separate the warm and cool colours to opposite sides of the block. I'll have to try that next time.

There are so many great log cabin variations, I am sure I will be making another again soon.
