Yoyo Quilt

Thursday, May 28, 2009

I finished the yoyo quilt just in time for the school's fundraiser on Saturday night. It would have looked better more heavily quilted but I just ran out of time. I am very happy with how it turned out and the quilt I am now making for JW will be very similar (almost all the yoyos are exactly the same as the ones on this quilt). I am using a cream fabric instead of white for the background so it will look a little different once it's done.
Gosh it feels good to post about a completed project!

Just around the corner

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Well, not until July but I live with a cycling fan so we're already thinking about it. Mr Duyvken is very excited.

Be still my beating heart

Stumbled across a pattern for a little boy's tie today.

I see a lot of these in my future.

Craft Room

Friday, May 22, 2009

I am looking forward to the next Craft Room meeting on Wednesday and, having finished the quilt I made for G's school's fundraiser (woohoo!) I did some work on the piece I am going to take with me. It will be the centre panel of a medallion quilt. Hopefully, I'll have the applique finished and I will be able to spend the evening stitching down yoyos. That doesn't require much concentration so I should be able to chat, eat and take photos as well.
I can't wait! I wonder who it's for?

Thank you M

I was lucky enough to win Eastern Max's giveaway a few weeks ago. She sent me the most wonderful washer. It's just lovely and it was delightful getting a parcel in the mail, it was beautifully wrapped and the kids were so excited to help me open it. I must admit that their enthusiasm waned when the tissue paper was folded back to reveal.... a face washer. The look on their faces? Priceless.

Thank you M. I love it!

There is a new little babe in the world tonight.
Welcome Andreas, may your life be long and your friendships lasting. I don't need to wish you love because I know you will be doted on and adored. I also know that you will be grown into a man who treats others well because your mama and papa know that raising babies is not a task to be taken lightly. I look forward to watching it happen.
I hope to hold you soon, while you are still wispy and new, and to share in the wonder of your birth.
I am reminded of one of my favourite books whenever I hear of a birth and so I end with this quote -
Look! Another baby is landing
Listen to the bells chime
Welcome to Earth, baby
You've landed at just the right time!

JW watching the older kids play from the back steps.

Mr Duyvken and C.

We bought Mr Duyvken some socks to match his shirt.

Would it be wrong to have another baby just so I can get one of these?

Best Mother's Day Ever

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

I got so many beautifully home-made cards, notes and pictures and this great book (picture swiped from Anna Walker's website). We were going to go riding in Centennial Park but the weather was a little iffy so we stayed put and pottered around instead. I loved it.

Sadly, I have no photos to share because the drive we stored all our photos on (yes, all our photos) is having a few issues. Luckily, we had recently backed up everything onto Mr Duyvken's work computer but it looks like we've lost our photos for April. That's not so bad, I hear you say, and you're probably right but JW's 1st birthday was in April. I'm tempted to do a re-enactment in the style Australia's Most Wanted so that when she is a teen she can't claim we cared so little for her we didn't even celebrate her first birthday. I'm not kidding, I am seriously tempted. How sad is that?

I hope we can get the media drive and all the related programmes up and running again soon because I am missing sharing my photos with you and the memory card in the camera will be full soon.

Did I mention...

...that I bought this (in grey) for my youngest sister?

Actually, I would have liked to keep it for myself but she is an editor so it did make more sense to give it to her. Plus, she got to wear it at the book fair!

The company was just delightful and I would happily buy from them again.

In fact, I might buy myself a scarf for my birthday :-)

A meme from Blackbird

Tuesday, May 05, 2009

Blackbird tagged me to do a meme and it has given me a little skip in my step, thank you BB. I think being tagged is lovely. To me it feels like the blogging equivalent of a friendly smile and a wave from someone you see all the time but don't necessarily know really well. It makes me feel very cheery.
However, the copy/paste function isn't working for some reason so I am going to have to type the whole thing out which, in a very first-world-how-bloody-good-is-my-life-but-I-am-going-to-bitch-about-it-anyway fashion makes me not feel very cheery.
I love them so much I'm going to send BB and big airkiss *mwah* and do it anyway, here goes!

What are your current obsessions?
Sadly, the pronounciation of 'meme'. Is it me-me or meem?
And, the rules for small sided games football as I have (in a fit of insanity) volunteered to coach J's U6 soccer team.

Which item from you wardrobe do you wear most often?
Now that the weather is cooler probably my midnight denim jeans but in the summer I lived in navy blue cargo shorts.

What's for dinner?
We just ate and it was a brown lentil & tomato dish with roasted kumara and potatoes and steamed broccoli with a wholegrain mustard dressing. It was delicious, even if I do say so myself.
What's your greatest fear at the moment?
That I will be a cr*p soccer coach. See above. Seriously, it's keeping me up at night. Lucky for me there is not much else worrying me right now. For the moment, we are all well and on an even keel.

What are you listening to?
Melody Gardot, G doing her piano practice, J and C singing the alphabet song and arguing about the 'hello men oh pee' part.

If you were a goddess what would you be?
I would be a protector of children. In the style of the greek or roman gods, I would be loving and gentle to all children but vengeful and nasty to those who mistreat them.

What are your favourite holiday spots?
Far north Queensland and other warm and sunny places. Fantasy holiday spots? France, New York, Canada.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished Eagle Strike by Anthony Horowitz and don't have anything else lined up because I just can't bring myself to go back to Eat Pray Love. Will probably go to the library tomorrow to pick something up, any suggestions? I'm excited about the new AS Byatt.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Slothing on couch watching movies with Mr Duyvken.

Who or what makes you laugh?
C is so off the wall. I find it hard to believe that so much personality can come out of her little 2 1/2 year old mind. She takes after her godmother!

What is your favourite sping thing to do?
It's just mean to ask this question of me now that I am breaking out the winter jumpers and using an electric blanket to warm up the bed. However, I am a good host so I will answer your question - my favourite spring thing to do is to sit on the beach feeling warm sand beneath my feet and the heat of the sun on my skin.

Where are you planning to travel next?
Hopefully, My Duyvken and I will spend a few days in Byron Bay later in the year to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. There'll be warm sand up there for sure!

What is the best thing you ate or drank lately?
[is that question grammatically correct? M will know!] I had some delicious salt and pepper tofu on Sunday night.

When was the last time you were tipsy?
It doesn't feel like very long ago but I can't remember exactly. I guess that confirms that I was tipsy and not just sipping politely.

What is your favourite ever film?
[not confident about the grammar here either] Immortal Beloved, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and dozens of others.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned from your children?
Knowing when to stop being consistent and to start being flexible... and then when to go back to being consistent again.

What song can't you get out of your head?
The 2 times tables.
Oh yeah.

What book do you know you should read but refuse to?
Anything by Barbara Kingsolver, I just can't get into them.

What is your physical abnormality/abnormal physical ability?
How polite of them to phrase the question suggesting that I only have one physical abnormality. Hm, according to my sister-in-law I have awesome feet, does that count?

What is your favourite colour?

Regular meme rules apply so you know the drill. I'd like to tag Eleanor, Eurolush, Kim, Corrie and Megan.

Bag Shopping

Current fave handbags. It seems I like red!

The prices though!! Dear lord, who's buying these things?

My favourite quote from today's SMH.
"It was like a river," the manager of the Coogee Tennis Club, Steve Loeffler, said. "Like a river's come through your house and you're standing there going, 'what the f--k'."
